Canon XL2 Camcorder Review
The Canon XL2 camcorder is an extremely popular camera among our customers and we wanted to shed some light on why this is the case. In the following months, we are going to do a number of camera reviews, like the Canon XL2, that have become extremely popular in the industry. Although most reviews are written about a product when it is first released, little is known about the item at this point. Writing a review about a product when you have only used it for a few days doesn’t really give you the time to get to know the product. That is why we are doing reviews of products that have been out for some time.
Canon XL2 Camcorder History
The Canon XL2 Camcorder is part of the Canon XL Series, the big brother series to the Canon GL family. The Canon XL series first started off with the Canon XL1 which was first introduced in 1997. In 2001 the Canon Xl1s was introduced to replace the Canon XL1. In 2004 the Canon XL2 was released and it was followed up by the Canon XL-H1 camcorder, which was released in 2006.
This camera has been used in a number of settings, but most recently it was used by one of our customers to film the reality tv series Battle of the Bow. They choose the camera for it’s high quality picture and sound capabilities. You can checkout footage of the show at Battleofthebow.com
Popular Features of the Canon XL2 Include (ie why people typically purchase the XL2):
Canon Flourite 20x Lens- This lens is a beauty and thus the Canon XL2 has great depth of field. This helps you create a video that doesn’t have the “flat” or home video like feel to it.
Variable Frame Rate- Allows you to shoot in 60i, 30p and 24p.
Image Stabilization- The Canon XL2 has a 20x image stabilized lens, allowing you to shoot better in low-light.
Interchangeable lens- the 20x lens can be swapped out for a number of other lenses such as the very popular Canon 3x Wide Angle Lens.
The Canon XL2 vs. XL1s
- The Canon XL2 can shoot in 24p, producing a much more filmlike effect in your video. The Canon XL1s cannot do this.
-The Canon XL2 has a new 20x image stabilized lens that is an upgrade from the Canon 16x lens on the Canon XL1s. It is a fluorite lens, with is cleaner than the lens for the XL1s and was built with better glass. Therefore, there is less color aberration.
-The Canon XL2 also has 2 built-in XLR audio ports allowing you to connect professional microphones. The Canon XL1s does not.
-The Canon XL2 has a newer viewfinder that can flip open to reveal a small lcd screen. The Canon XL1s cannot do this.
Pros & Cons
Cons :
No Flip Out LCD Monitor (if you want an LCD Monitor on a Standard definition camera, I would recommend looking at the Sony VX2100 Camcorder), No HD (A comparably priced HD alternative is the Canon XH-A1 or the Sony HDR-FX1) However, you will lose a number of capabilities by switching to HD.
Pros:
High Quality Image Stabilized Lens allows you to shoot better in low-light, Variable Frame Rates (60i, 30p, and 24p for a more filmlike effect), Built-in XLR Ports for professional microphones, 16:9 Capture to shoot in widescreen mode, and interchangeable lenses to allow you to create that special look you are going for.
All in all the Canon XL2 is a great professional camcorder. It is extremely popular with our customers and continues to be one of our best selling camcorders. If you have any questions at all about this camera, feel free to call us at 866.374.5884 or checkout our website at OneQuality.com
Canon XL2 Cameras Used To Create Reality TV Show “Battle of the Bow”
We would like to start off by congratulating the guys over at Media Stash for their successful first season of Battle of the Bow. For those who don’t know, Battle of the Bow is a reality television show that followed 10 hunting teams around the woods of western Wisconsin and was aired on the Sportsman Channel.
We were contacted by the producers of Battle of The Bow last year about their ideas for a reality television series. At that point, they were worried that the production would never start due to the cost of the cameras they were looking to buy, as they planned to have each of the 10 teams film themselves and outfit them with their own camera. They were on a tight budget, like many of our customers, and they weren’t able or willing to overpay for new cameras. After talking with us, they decided to purchase 10 Used Canon XL2 Mini Dv Camcorders from OneQuality.com, and the rest is history.
We were happy to see that in the final episode of Battle of the Bow, they mentioned OneQuality.com and how we were able to help them get their project off the ground. The clip below shows where OneQuality.com is mentioned (3:00 – 4:00 is exactly where OneQuality is mentioned).
You can watch all of the full episodes of Battle of the Bow at www.battleofthebow.com/videos.html
If you are interested in the Canon XL2 camera, you should definitely take a look at all of the Battle of the Bow episodes to get an idea of what this powerful camera is capable of. You can view our stock of Canon XL2 cameras at Used Canon XL2.
The final episode of Battle of the Bow aired at the end of March and we look forward to seeing season 2 soon!
We are always excited to see and hear what our customers are doing with the cameras they purchase at OneQuality.com. Please send us your story of how you used our cameras, and you may be the next success story featured our website (G-rated content only, please). We look forward to helping get your next project started.
